　リポカリンの一種であるNGALは健常人の血中や尿中に存在していますが、その量は各種の炎症性疾患や細菌感染時に上昇することが知られています1)。腎臓移植後の急性腎炎の初期にもIL-18とともに上昇が見られます2)。またNGALは心臓バイパス手術時に発生する急性腎機能障害の血中マーカーとされているほか3)、さらに近年では肥満との関連も報告されています4)。NGALの一部はmatrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) と複合体を形成していますが、これはMMP-9を分解から守り、酵素活性を維持する役割があると考えられています5)。またがんとの関連においては、様々ながん種においてNGALの発現上昇が確認されています。 NGALは乳がん患者の尿中に高値に検出されます6)。またNGALはすい臓がん、大腸がん、肝臓がん患者のがん組織中で高発現していることが報告されています7)。MBLのNGAL-ELISA Kitは、すい臓がん細胞株であるKLM1、PK1、PK59、大腸がん細胞株のWiDr、またH596やPC9など一部の肺がん細胞株の培養上清中の抗原を捉えることができます。
