Background | Heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a member of the EGF family that bind to and activate the EGF receptor (EGFR/ErbB1) and ErbB4. HB-EGF is synthesized as a single pass membrane-anchored precursor containing a heparin-binding domain, EGF domain, and cytoplasmic domain and then released in the soluble form by ectodomain shedding. HB-EGF is necessary for normal development of the lung, eyelid, and heart and also plays important roles in the development and progression of cancer, such as in cancer metastasis and angiogenesis, and drug-resistance. | |
