Background Cysteine-rich with EGF-like domain protein 1 (CRELD1) is a multi-pass membrane protein and belongs to the CRELD family. CRELD1 is characterized by epidermal growth factor-like repeats with cysteine-rich domains. It may function as a cell adhesion molecule. CRELD1 mRNA is highly expressed in the fetal lung, liver, and kidney, and also expressed in the adult heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. Missense mutations in the CRELD1 gene are associated with a heart defect called the atrioventricular septal defect.
